out and about around paradise city ...
This historic town is certainly worth a day or two's visit from Hua Hin. It is some 80km north and is easily reachable by bus, taxi or train. The journey takes around an hour.
The main attractions here are temples and the old Royal Palace that sits on top of a hill slightly outside the town centre. Built in 1860 by King Mongkut (Rama IV), its official name is Phra Nakhon Khiri. This was the setting for the film "The King and I". Fortunately, a tram system was built a number of years ago to carry visitors to the top - previously it had been an arduous climb by foot up hundreds of stairs. The views over the surrounding countryside are spectacular and the Royal Temple of Wat Phra Kaew is set on top of an adjoining hill.
Another popular attraction is Khao Luang caves which contains 170 Buddha statues, some extremely large. They are only 5km north of the town and after descending into the main chamber, two holes in the top allow natural sunlight to enter making the caves a photographer's dream.
There are some 6 temples in the centre of town that be strolled around in a hour or so. They have changed little since their construction and offer glimpses of old Siamese urban wats. This large sitting Buddha (right) is currently under construction on the hill just west of Petchaburi town.
Petchaburi also has a large shopping centre called Big C 7km south of the city and better hospitals than can be found in Hua Hin.
Petchaburi is still very much a Thai town and the visitors it attracts are generally on day trips, however for those who want to take in more of the atmosphere, there are a couple of hotels in the town and at the beach.
